What Takes Place in a Systemic Family Constellations Therapy Session?
What Happens During a Session?
Have you ever noticed yourself repeating behaviours, emotions, or relationship dynamics that feel unfamiliar or out of character? Family Constellation Therapy looks at how unresolved experiences, losses, trauma, or unconscious loyalties within your family system may still be shaping your present life.
This method was developed by Bert Hellinger and works with what is often called the knowing field. This refers to a shared field of awareness that holds information and memory across generations of a family. Through the constellation process, these unseen dynamics are brought into view so they can be recognised, processed, and gently released.
How a Session Is Structured
Group Sessions
Most constellation work takes place in a small group setting. A typical session unfolds as follows:
Opening and Orientation
The facilitator outlines how the process works and establishes a respectful, confidential environment.Clarifying the Focus
One participant briefly explains the issue or theme they wish to explore.Choosing Representatives
Other group members are selected to stand in for family members or key aspects of the issue.Creating the Constellation
These representatives are positioned in the room, forming a spatial representation of the family system.Noticing the Dynamics
Feelings, physical sensations, and impulses to move often emerge naturally, offering insight into hidden relational patterns.Restorative Movements
With gentle guidance, dialogue and repositioning take place so excluded or overlooked elements can be acknowledged and order can begin to return.Integration
The client may step into the constellation themselves, allowing them to sense and embody the new, more balanced configuration.
One to One Sessions
For those who prefer privacy, individual sessions use symbolic tools such as objects, floor markers, or guided imagery instead of group representatives. In my online sessions, I use simple paper triangles to stand in for family members, and clients are often surprised by how powerful and revealing the process still is.
What You May Notice
Many people feel uncertain or apprehensive at the start, followed by a deep emotional or experiential shift as insights surface. In the days and weeks afterwards, clients frequently report quiet but meaningful changes in how they relate to themselves and others.
Those acting as representatives may temporarily experience emotions or bodily sensations connected to the role, which typically fade once the session concludes.
Even those observing the process often leave with personal reflections or emotional shifts of their own.
How Constellation Work Can Help
Family Constellations may support you to:
Bring hidden family patterns into conscious awareness
Soften the effects of inherited or generational trauma
Re establish balance and a sense of belonging within the family system
Let go of emotional burdens carried for others
Introduce movement where life has felt stagnant or blocked
Reconnect with inner steadiness, resilience, and clarity
Common Questions
Do I need detailed knowledge of my family history?
No. The most significant dynamics often emerge without prior information.Do I need to believe in the process for it to work?
No. Many people who approach it sceptically report some of the most meaningful outcomes. Is the work safe?
When facilitated by a trained practitioner, the process is generally experienced as contained and supportive, though it can be emotionally stirring. Most people leave feeling lighter rather than overwhelmed. How many sessions are necessary?
Some experience a noticeable shift after a single constellation, while others return periodically for ongoing or deeper exploration.
Preparing for Your Session
Arrive with a clear intention and a willingness to stay open.
Wear clothing that allows you to feel comfortable and grounded.
Leave space in your schedule afterwards, as insights often continue to unfold over time.
A Way Forward in Healing
Family Constellation Therapy is not about analysing the past or retelling old stories. It focuses instead on restoring order, connection, and peace within the family system. By addressing these deeper systemic layers, many people experience relief from long standing patterns, greater ease in relationships, and a renewed sense of stability and strength in their own lives.
