What is Family Constellations?

Family Constellations is a form of psychotherapy that looks beyond the individual and works with the wider family system. Rather than focusing only on personal history or conscious insight, it uses systems thinking to reveal how patterns of trauma, loss, loyalty, and belonging move through families across generations - and move forward with freedom.

This work is deeply experiential. Instead of analysing a problem, the process allows it to be seen and felt. Many people describe sessions as beautiful, emotionally moving, and almost ceremonial in nature. The work engages the subconscious mind, the body, and what is often referred to as the ancestral or relational field.

Shifts happen not through effort or insight alone, but through direct experience, as the nervous system recognises a new and more truthful order. Many clients comment that it is the most powerful form of therapy they’ve tried.

This work does not require other family members to attend. Healing occurs just by yourself alone, because the work addresses the internalised relationships and loyalties already living within you.

At its heart, Family Constellations is not about blaming families or revisiting painful stories endlessly. It is about restoring balance, dignity, love and belonging within the system.

When something is put back in its right place, the effects are often felt not only personally, but across relationships and sometimes generations. In this way, the work supports individual wellbeing while quietly rippling outward into the wider family system.

What do people choose Family Constellations therapy for?

People are often drawn to Family Constellations when understanding and talking about their past has not been enough to create real change. They may have insight and self awareness, yet still find themselves pulled into the same emotional reactions or relational patterns. This work supports change at a much deeper level, where something can finally resettle rather than repeat.

People commonly choose Family Constellations to support:

• Feeling safer and more content in relationships
• Releasing patterns that do not make logical sense but will not shift
• Moving out of emotional reactivity and into greater stability and self-trust
• Understanding and resolving repeating dynamics with partners, family, work, friends or authority figures
• Restoring a sense of inner order, belonging, support and direction
• Making peace with the past without reliving painful experiences
• Feeling more at home in the body ands safer emotionally

At its core, this work is for people who want to live more freely, whilst tapping in more strongly to the love inherently available through the family system (even in the most difficult of circumstances). As Martin Buber wrote, healing happens in right relationship. Family Constellations supports those relationships to reorganise internally, within the subconscious mind and the ancestral field, so life can be met with more peace, safety and freedom.

Where Does Family Constellations Come From?

Family Constellations therapy was developed in the late twentieth century by Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist and former Catholic priest. After spending many years living among the Zulu people in South Africa, he observed a deeply rooted respect for ancestors and an understanding that unresolved events in one generation can influence the entire lineage. These experiences profoundly informed his perspective. Hellinger later integrated these indigenous principles with Western therapeutic approaches, forming what is now an ever-developing body of work known as Family Constellations.

Family Constellations has been used in therapeutic settings around the world, including in divorce and family mediation contexts, and there is a growing body of academic research supporting its effectiveness in addressing relational, emotional, and psychosomatic issues.

Family Constellations has entered mainstream awareness in recent years. It has been featured on Goop and deeply explored in the Netflix series Another Self, which introduced many people to the way unresolved family dynamics can shape love, health, and life direction.

While Family Constellations is experiential in nature, several contemporary scientific frameworks help contextualise its impact. The concept of morphic resonance, proposed by Rupert Sheldrake, suggests that patterns of information may extend beyond the individual. Epigenetics has demonstrated that stress can influence gene expression across generations, offering a biological lens for understanding inherited trauma. Neuroplasticity further shows that the brain is capable of reorganising itself in response to new experiences. Together, these perspectives suggest that when hidden systemic patterns are brought into awareness and integrated, both psychological and physiological shifts are possible

When This Work May Not Be Appropriate

Family Constellations and Rapid Core Healing are deep, relational therapies that work with the nervous system and subconscious patterns. They are not crisis interventions, and they are not suitable for everyone at every point in their life.

This work may not be appropriate right now if you are:

  • Currently in crisis or living in an unsafe situation

  • Experiencing serious mental health conditions such as psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, personality disorders such as Borderline Personality Disorder, or severe dissociation

  • Engaging in ongoing self harm or experiencing active suicidal thoughts

  • Using alcohol or substances to cope emotionally in an uncontrolled way

  • Looking for a quick fix, rescue, or immediate relief rather than integration and responsibility

  • Unable to self regulate between sessions or tolerate strong emotional material

  • Hoping the practitioner will inflict the healing upon you

Whilst this work is typically very safe and gentle, it requires a basic level of safety, stability, and capacity to meet what arises.

There is nothing wrong with you if this is not the right time. Readiness is not a moral quality. It is a nervous system state.

If you would like to understand this in more depth, including why these boundaries matter and what readiness looks like, you can read the full explanation here.

Camilla Brinkworth

Camilla is a highly experienced degree-qualified natural healthcare practitioner based in Ubud, Bali, offering Rapid Core Healing, Couples Constellations, and Family Constellations both in person and online. Originally trained as a naturopath with a strong foundation in nutrition and plant-based medicine, she quickly came to see the limits of working only with the physical body and conscious mind (both with her clinical practice and within her own life). This led her to specialise in mind-body and relational therapies that work with the subconscious and family systems where many emotional and relational patterns are formed.

Her work is shaped by both extensive training and lived experience. Through navigating her own emotional and relational challenges, Camilla experienced the depth and effectiveness of these modalities firsthand. She has since supported people from all walks of life, including surgeons, Wall Street bankers, creatives, students, yogis, and high-profile clients from many cultures, to release long held patterns and reconnect with themselves and others.

Camilla works with warmth, compassion, and deep care for her clients, creating a space where deep healing, emotional integration, and relational understanding can unfold naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Family Constellations was developed by Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist who spent many years living and working with the Zulu people in South Africa. There, he observed that healing was understood not only at an individual level, but within the wider family and ancestral system.

Among the Zulu, illness and suffering were seen as signs that something in the family order had been disrupted or forgotten, rather than as personal failure. When what had been excluded was acknowledged, balance often returned. Drawing on these insights, along with psychotherapy and systems thinking, Hellinger developed Family Constellations as a way to reveal how love and loyalty move through family systems. The work focuses less on analysis and more on restoring order, which many experience as deeply settling and relieving.

  • In a private Family Constellations session, the work unfolds gently and experientially rather than through discussion or analysis. After a short conversation to understand what you would like support with, the process moves into a felt, embodied exploration of your family system. This involves the use little paper triangles and guided inner perception to represent key family members or dynamics. What emerges is often information the rational mind could not have reasoned its way toward, but which the nervous system recognises immediately.

You are not asked to relive the past or tell detailed stories. Instead, the focus is on noticing sensations, emotions, and subtle shifts as the system reorganises itself. When something that has been excluded, carried, or held out of place is acknowledged and brought back into its rightful place, there is often a sense of relief, clarity, or quiet settling. Many people describe it as something clicking into order, and it feels deeply natural, safe and supportive.

I offer private Family Constellations sessions in Ubud, Bali, as well as online for clients around the world. Whether in person or online, the work meets you where you are and unfolds at a pace that feels safe, respectful, and deeply compassionate.

  • In a group Family Constellations workshop, participants come together in a shared space to explore individual constellations within a wider group setting. One person’s issue is worked with at a time, while others are invited to take part as representatives for family members or key elements of the system. This is not role play or acting. Representatives are guided by bodily sensations, emotions, and subtle impulses that often reflect the underlying dynamics of the system with surprising accuracy.

Even when you are not having your own constellation facilitated, being part of the group is typically deeply meaningful and powerful. Many people notice that representing in someone else’s constellation brings insight, emotional release, or a sense of resolution that relates to their own life. There is often a strong feeling of shared humanity and quiet reverence in the room, as if something larger than the individual is being acknowledged.

I offer group Family Constellations workshops in Ubud, Bali, and occasionally online. Each workshop is held with care, clear boundaries, and respect for the depth of the work, creating a safe space where meaningful shifts can occur.

  • Family Constellations and Rapid Core Healing are most appropriate when someone has a reasonable level of emotional stability and a willingness to meet their inner experience with curiosity and care. This work suits people who feel ready to explore relational and emotional patterns experientially, rather than through analysis alone, and who are open to allowing something deeper to shift without force.

There are, however, times when this work is not appropriate. Active situations of domestic violence require immediate safety and specialised support, not systemic or experiential processes. Likewise, individuals experiencing acute psychiatric conditions, such as active psychosis or severe instability, need structured medical and psychiatric care as a priority. In these situations, this work may be considered later, if and when there is sufficient stability and professional support in place.

My approach is careful and ethically grounded. If I feel this work is not the right fit at a particular time, I will always say so, and where possible, guide you toward more appropriate forms of support.

  • Family Constellations is not astrology. It is a therapeutic, systems based approach that works with family dynamics, emotional bonds, and ancestral patterns as they live in the subconscious mind and nervous system.

That said, as an Asterian Astrologer, I sometimes use astrology as a supportive lens alongside this work with my regular clients. Astrology is not used to diagnose or predict outcomes, but as a way of offering perspective. It can help people understand where they are in a larger life cycle, recognise their innate strengths and challenges, and make sense of why certain themes may be surfacing at a particular time.

In my couples work, astrology can be especially helpful for understanding compatibility, recurring friction points, and shared growth edges. Looking at transits and relational dynamics often brings compassion and context, allowing couples to meet their challenges with less blame and more curiosity. Astrology, when used this way, acts as an accent to the deeper experiential work of Family Constellations and Rapid Core Healing, rather than a replacement for it.
